British two-wheeler manufacturer Triumph has finally taken the wraps off the long-awaited Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X motorcycles. That being said, here are the top 5 things you need to know about the upcoming Bajaj-Triumph motorcycle duo.

Design

The new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles sport a neo-retro theme with 'tear-drop' shaped fuel tank and circular design elements such as LED headlamps, LED turn indicators, rear-view mirrors and LED tail lamps.

This neo-retro design theme is further complemented by plenty of iconic Triumph design elements as well. On top of that, both models come with premium hardware, which positively impacts the overall stance and looks of both motorcycles.

Powertrain

Powering the all-new Triumph Modern Classics range is a 398.15cc, liquid-cooled, 4-valve, DOHC, oversquare engine. This engine is tuned to produce 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm of torque at 6,500rpm.

Furthermore, both the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles sport a 6-speed gearbox with slip & assist clutch. Also, power is sent to the rear wheels via an X-ring chain drive.

Frame & Suspension

In terms of frame, both the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles use a tubular steel perimeter frame with a bolt-on rear subframe. Furthermore, both these motorcycles come with a twin-sided cast aluminium swingarm.

Thanks to the use of such a frame, the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles are on the lighter side. In fact, the Triumph Speed 400 weighs just 170kg, whereas the Scrambler 400 X weighs an additional 9kg.

Suspension-wise, both motorcycles come equipped with 43mm USD Big Piston forks at the front and a gas-charged monoshock with an external reservoir at the rear. However, the front and rear suspension travel on both motorcycles are quite different.

While the Triumph Speed 400 has a suspension travel of 140mm at the front and 130mm at the rear, the off-road-focussed Scrambler 400 X has more suspension travel at the front and rear by 10mm and 20mm, respectively.

Brakes

Both the new Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles come equipped with 230mm fixed disc with floating calipers at the rear. Other similarities include dual-channel ABS support along with a four-piston caliper at the front.

That being said, the front disc size of the Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle stands at 300mm, whereas the front disc unit on the Triumph Scrambler 400 X stands at 320mm. Overall, we expect good braking performance from both these motorcycles.

Features

Coming to the feature list, new Bajaj-Triumph motorcycles come equipped with features such as all-LED lighting, ride-by-wire tech, dual-channel ABS, switchable traction control, immobiliser, part-analogue part-digital instrument cluster and many more.

Thoughts About The Triumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400 X Motorcycles

The Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles are among the most-awaited motorcycles in the Indian two-wheeler market. However, in order to be a runaway success, the model has to come with an aggressive price tag.
