Toyota Kirloskar Motors recently relaunched the Toyota Innova Crysta MPV with diesel powertrain in India. The surprising move seems to have worked well for Toyota Kirloskar Motors as the Innova Crysta sales figures account for almost 25 per cent of total Toyota vehicle sales in the country.

Coming to the numbers, Toyota Kirloskar Motors managed to sell 4,786 units of Toyota Innova Crysta MPVs in May 2023. This means the YoY sales figure for the Innova Crysta improved by almost 75 per cent as the company managed to sell just 2,737 units in May 2022.

It is also worth mentioning that the Toyota Innova Crysta became the second best-selling model in the company's product lineup in May 2023. In fact, the Innova Crysta fell just 393 units short of the Toyota Glanza hatchback in terms of sales volume.

In comparison, Toyota Kirloskar Motors managed to sell just 2,990 units of the Toyota Innova Hycross MPV. Though a very respectable number, the Toyota Innova Crysta despite being an older model managed to register 60 per cent better sales figures compared to the Innova Hycross.

This sales figure also stands as a testament to how deep-rooted the Toyota Innova Crysta MPV is in the Indian market. This is surprising considering the newer Toyota Innova Hycross has bettered the Innova Crysta in almost all measurable parameters.

Even in terms of size, the new Toyota Innova Hycross is 20mm longer, 20mm wider, and also sports a mammoth 100mm extra space between its front and rear wheels. Furthermore, the monocoque construction of the Innova Hycross allows for even better packaging on the inside.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is powered exclusively by a 2.4-litre, turbocharged diesel engine. This engine produces 145bhp and 343Nm of torque. Furthermore, power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.

In comparison, the Toyota Innova Hycross is a front-wheel-drive vehicle and comes with two engine options. The base 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated, petrol engine produces 172bhp and 205Nm of peak torque. Also, this powertrain comes mated to a CVT gearbox.

On the other hand, the hybrid unit uses a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated, Atkinson cycle petrol engine and an electric motor. In combined form, this hybrid powertrain produces 184.8bhp and 206Nm of peak torque. Unlike the petrol-only version, this version uses an eCVT gearbox.

In terms of pricing, the Toyota Innova Hycross prices start from Rs 18.55 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes all the way up to Rs 29.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec ZX (O) trim level with the hybrid powertrain.

In comparison, Toyota is yet to reveal the price for the base spec 'G' variant of the Innova Crysta. However, the Toyota Innova Crysta 'GX' variant is priced at Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes all the way up to Rs 25.43 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec variant.

Thoughts About The Toyota Innova Hycross & Innova Crysta

With the re-launch of the Toyota Innova Crysta in India, the Japanese automaker has further strengthened its model lineup in the country with an unusual strategy. Moreover, the numbers do not lie and the decision to relaunch Innova Crysta seems to be working very well.
