Toyota is one of the most loved and respected brands in the Indian market for a reason. Almost all of the products launched by the Japanese auto giant have been extremely successful in India and buyers swear by Toyota's reliability and quality. While the Toyota Fortuner and Innova keep going strong and bringing in the numbers for Toyota, the brand has decided to enter an all-new segment in India.
The midsize SUV segment is, without a doubt, the most lucrative segment in India. In recent years, midsize SUVs have grown leaps and bounds. Demand for such SUVs is still on the rise despite the arrival of new competition and fresh models.
Toyota expects great numbers to come in from the midsize SUV segment and is hence launching one of its most awaited products - the Hyryder. It is expected to feature bold and muscular styling, with Toyota's signature design traits while also being compact enough to rival other midsize SUVs in the country.
According to reports, the Toyota Hyryder will be available with two engine options. The engine block remains the same 1.5-litre petrol unit, but it does come in two different states of tune. In fact, the engines will be vastly different from each other. The lower variants will be powered by a mild-hybrid setup while the top-spec variants will feature a strong-hybrid setup.
This makes the Toyota Hyryder the first midsize SUV to feature strong-hybrid technology. Its Maruti Suzuki sibling will be the second SUV in the segment to feature the technology. The engine in question is Suzuki's latest K15C 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. This is the very same engine unit found in the latest Maruti Suzuki XL6 and Ertiga.
The same state of tune will available in the upcoming Toyota Hyryder SUV and its Maruti Suzuki sibling. The mild-hybrid version puts out 103PS and will be available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic. This engine and transmission setup will only drive the front wheels.
The top-spec variants of the Toyota Hyryder will use a more sophisticated and greener engine. It is the same 1.5-litre K15C engine but is paired with a large battery pack and an electric motor much like the Suzuki Vitara currently on sale in international markets.
This variant of the Hyryder will have the capability to function as a pure electric at certain speeds and then will make use of the engine power to take on higher speeds. This strong-hybrid variant of the Toyota Hyryrder will be equipped with an AWD system and that is something to look forward to.
The Toyota Hyryder will be revealed on the first of July and will go on sale in India a couple of months after that. We expect Maruti Suzuki's version of the SUV to arrive just in time for the festive season later this year.
Thoughts On Toyota Hyryder Engine Specs & Other Details Being Revealed
Toyota has been riding on a wave of success in the last few years with products like the Etios, Innova, and Fortuner. These three products will continue to sell well over the next few years too. However, Toyota now seems to be looking at riding a higher wave and that wave will arrive with the launch of the Hyryder.
Indians love Toyota and will happily lap up the Hyryder even if it is priced at a slightly higher price point than its rivals. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos might finally see some tough competition.
