Ola Electric has been at the forefront of the EV revolution since its inception in 2017. Since the launch of their product, Ola has been the top-selling electric scooter in India. With a focus on affordability, and environmental consciousness, they are driving the adoption of EVs in India.

India faces a significant challenge in ensuring rider safety on the roads. Sadly, even after imposing strict laws and regulations, people still hesitate to follow traffic rules. In our country, it is common to witness riders without helmets, which poses a serious risk to their well-being.

Ola Electric is developing a helmet detection system for its electric two-wheelers to address this critical issue. By implementing this advanced technology, Ola aims to enhance safety measures and encourage responsible riding practices among users.

The helmet detection system will utilize a camera to identify whether the rider is wearing a helmet or not. Once detected, the information is transmitted to the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU).

The VCU will process the information and subsequently communicate with the Motor Control Unit to determine whether the vehicle should switch to Ride mode or remain inactive. With this technology, Ola aims to prioritize rider safety and ensure that the vehicle operates only when the rider is wearing a helmet.

If the vehicle is in Ride mode and the helmet detection system identifies that the rider is not wearing a helmet, the scooter will automatically change to the Park mode.

Once the scooter switches to Park mode, a notification will be displayed on the vehicle's dashboard as a gentle reminder for the rider to wear a helmet before resuming their journey.

The system has to detect the helmet on the rider's head; only then will the VCU allow the scooter to switch back to the ride mode. Once in Ride mode, the VCU monitors the rider, prioritizing their safety throughout the journey.

Last month, TVS also grabbed the headlines for announcing their camera-based helmet reminder system. However, Ola takes it a step further by not allowing the rider to continue the journey if the rider isn't wearing a helmet.

Thoughts On Ola's Helmet Detection System

Ola's helmet detection system promotes the adoption of safe riding practices and serves as a constant reminder for riders to prioritize their protection. Even though we're yet to receive more information on it, this system marks a significant step forward in enhancing the rider's safety.
