Maruti Suzuki To Discontinue S-Cross To Make Way For YFG?

Though Maruti Suzuki discontinues a model from its lineup, it is unlikely to affect the overall sales figure of the brand because of the mediocre sales performance of the S-Cross in India.

Speaking about the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, the premium crossover was launched back in 2015. At that time, the Maruti Suzuki offered many segment-first features to maintain the premium image and added convenience.

At the time of launch, Maruti Suzuki offered the S-Cross with two engine options. The base engine was a 1.3-litre multijet diesel engine with 88bhp of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque.

On the other hand, the 1.6-litre multijet diesel engine produced 118bhp of peak power and 320Nm of peak torque - which is more torque than the Mahindra Scorpio. Apart from that, this engine is a favourite among tuners in India.

To utilize this torque, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross equipped with the 1.6-litre engine came with a 6-speed manul gearbox as opposed to the 5-speed unit in the 1.3-litre version.

However, like all enthusiast-friendly models in India, the company soon pulled the plug on the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross equipped with the 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine.

Moving forward, thanks to the introduction of BS6 emission norms, Maruti Suzuki pulled the plug on diesel engines and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross was now available with a tried-and-tested 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine with 103.3bhp of peak power and 138Nm of peak torque.

This engine is offered with a choice of either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Also, despite few updates and a big marketing budget, the sales figures of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross failed to impress the automaker.

Also, Maruti Suzuki's plans to launch the YFG SUV in the Indian automobile market is likely to push the automaker to pull the plug on the premium crossover.

Speaking about the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YFG SUV, it will come with a self-charging hybrid powertrain and is likely to be launched around the festive season this year.

According to sources, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YFG SUV is likely to feature the Toyota's 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated Atkinson cycle petrol engine. This engine is further boosted by a 141Nm electric motor. Together this powertrain produces 113.5bhp of peak power.

In addition to that, we expect the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YFG SUV to come packed with features such as a large 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 360-degree surround-view camera, heads-up display, an electric sunroof, cooled glove box, rear AC vents, and many more.

Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

Though the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is a solid product with good driving dynamics and efficient powertrain options, the model failed to excite Indian consumers. Thanks to this mediocre sales performance, Maruti Suzuki is likely to pull the plug on the model to make more room for its upcoming 'YFG' hybrid SUV.
