Mahindra recently commenced the deliveries of the Armado Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV) to India's armed forces. In fact, the Mahindra Armado is the country's first indigenously designed and developed ALSV.

According to Mahindra, the Armado is designed to be a modular vehicle that can not only be configured or upgraded for various types of operations but also allows for easy maintenance. This allows the new Mahindra Armado to be serviced very efficiently.

Since the Mahindra Armado is an ALSV, the model is designed to provide protected mobility as per STANAG Level I Ballistics. On top of that, the Mahindra Armado ALSV can also be upgraded to STANAG Level II Ballistic protection.

Other than that, the Mahindra Armado is designed to carry up to 8 passengers. Moreover, the ALSV is also designed with ample storage space to keep arms and ammunition. Speaking about ammunition, the Mahindra Armado has a rated payload capacity of 1,000 kilogrammes.

Coming to the specifications, the Mahindra Armado uses a completely different engine than any of Mahindra's vehicles on the road. This 3.2-litre, turbocharged, 6-cylinder diesel engine puts out 213bhp at 3,600rpm and 500Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.

What is interesting about this engine is that it has been designed to run on various types of NATO fuels. Furthermore, this powertrain comes mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Other interesting details include all-around independent suspension and differential locks at both axles.

It is also worth mentioning that the Mahindra Armado comes equipped with a central tyre inflation system and an air filtration unit. To further increase its capability in rough terrain, the Mahindra Armado ALSV also comes equipped with a self-recovery winch as well.

Mahindra claims that the Armado ALSV has a top speed of more than 120km/h and it can accelerate to 60km/h from a standstill in just 12 seconds. While the numbers may rival commercial trucks, the fact is that the Armado can replicate these performance figures on various terrains.

Thoughts About The Mahindra Armado

The deliveries of the Mahindra Armado is expected to improve the mobility of the Indian armed forces, especially near the border areas with tough terrains. On top of that, the added layer of protection offered by Mahindra Armado can lend much-required protection to the armed personnel.
