Hyundai May 2022 Sales Report - YoY Domestic Sales Grow By Just Over 69%

South Korean carmaker Hyundai has released its sales numbers for the month of May 2022. Hyundai sold a total of 42,293 units in the domestic market in the month of April 2022 while total sales including exports hit 51,263 units.

Hyundai's total sales were up by 20,560 units or nearly 67 per cent compared to May 2021 when the South Korean carmaker had sold 30,703 units as the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the nation. However, May 2022 saw Hyundai lose the second spot in the domestic car market to Tata Motors for the second time in just six months.

Hyundai's total of 42,293 units fell 1,048 units short of Tata's numbers. Mumbai-based carmaker Tata Motors enjoyed its best-ever monthly sales numbers since its inception in the month of May 2022, selling 43,341 units in the domestic market. The last time, Tata pipped Hyundai to the second spot was in December 2021.

However, it was not all doom and gloom as May 2022's numbers saw Hyundai's sales increase by 69.17 per cent Year-over-Year compared to the same month in 2021. Hyundai sold 17,292 more units of cars and SUVs in May 2022 compared to the same month in 2021, when it sold a total of 25,001 units in India.

However, Month-over-Month sales comparisons see Hyundai once again dip into the red as the carmaker's dropped slightly by 3.88 per cent or 1,708 units compared to April 2022. In the fourth month of 2022, Hyundai had sold a total of 44,001 cars and SUVs in the Indian market.

Hyundai, though has a reason for the slight slump in the numbers as its two production facilities in Tamil Nadu underwent their biannual scheduled maintenance in the month of May. Production at the two Hyundai facilities was shut down from the 16th to the 21st of May, 2021.

Thankfully, the carmaker's exports were up in terms of Year-over-year metrics by 3,268 units or 57.31 per cent. In May 2022, Hyundai exported 8,970 cars from India compared to 5,702 units in May 2021.

Last month also saw Hyundai remove the Santro from the production line. The new Santro, which had arrived a few years back hadn't been doing so well in sales numbers, However, to date, Hyundai has remained mum about the status of the Santro's availability in the Indian market.

However, Hyundai is not ready to give up its spot as the nation's second largest carmaker. The South Korean automaker is set to launch the facelifted Venue compact SUV in India on the 16th of June and has also confirmed that the new Tucson will be arriving on our roads soon.

Hyundai is also readying its flagship vehicle for the Indian market in the form of the Ionic 5 EV. The Ionic 5 which shares its platform with the newly launched Kia EV6 is set to be assembled locally at the carmaker's Chennai facilities and is expected to be a more affordable EV option compared to its Kia sibling.

Thoughts On Hyundai's May Sales

Hyundai lost its spot as the second largest carmaker in the country to record-breaking Tata Motors in May. However, the carmaker's sales are on an upward trend which shows that it slowly but surely recovering from the ravages of the pandemic.
