Honda Activa Hits 30 Million Sales Mark: India's Favourite Scooter Breaks Another Record

Twenty-two years after it was first launched in India in 2001, the Honda Activa scooter has gone past the 30 million (3 crore) sales mark in the country.

The Honda Activa was the first two-wheeler from the Japanese firm to be launched in India after its split from Hero. The Activa arrived in India as a 100cc scooter, and Honda sold 55,000 units of automatic two-wheeler in 2001-02.

In 2005-06, Activa crossed the 1 million sales mark, just 55 months after it first arrived in India. Three years later, as monthly sales numbers hit the 50,000 mark, the second-generation Activa arrived in India with a 110cc engine and Honda's Combi-brake system.

In 2012-13, monthly sales crossed the 100,000 mark, and the Honda Activa achieved the 5 million sales milestone in India. A year later, Honda launched the Activa i and updated the engine with its HET (Honda Eco Technology), which raised the mileage to a claimed 60km/l.

The next year in 2014-15, the Honda Activa 3G arrived. It bought changes to the design of the scooter and saw the Activa enter the 125cc segment with the Activa 125.

In the same year, the Activa became the best-selling two-wheeler in the country. One year later, it wrote itself into the history books again, becoming the first scooter to hit the 10 million (1 million) sales mark.

In 2016, Activa became the first scooter in India to be compliant with new BS4 and AHO norms, and a year later, the scooter crossed the 15 million sales mark. The same year, Honda changed the game again with the all-new Activa 5G. The Honda Activa 5G was the first 110cc scooter in India with a full LED headlamp and position lamp.

The next year, Honda unveiled the Activa 6G at Auto Expo 2018 and launched the updated scooter along with the new Activa 125 BS-VI. The latter featured new tech like idle-start-stop and side stand indicator with engine inhibitor.

The same year, the Honda Activa breached the 20 million (2 crore) customers mark. The next 5 million (taking the total to 25 million/ 2.5 crore) took just another two years despite the ongoing pandemic, with the Activa hitting the mark in 2020-21, 20 years after the launch of the OG Activa.

It was the Activa that brought Honda's Smart Key tech to India when it arrived with the launch of the Activa H-Smart last year with the updated scooter taking the market to new heights once again.

The Honda Activa has become the byword for automatic scooters in India in its 22-year journey in India. Frequent updates have seen customers flock to the Activa, allowing it to give even the venerable Splendor a run for its money as it cemented its place as the nation's most loved scooter.
