Hero MotoCorp partnered with iconic American two-wheeler manufacturer Harley-Davidson and recently launched the much-awaited Harley-Davidson X440 motorcycle in India. Similar to Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj had also partnered with an iconic overseas two-wheeler manufacturer.

In the second case, Bajaj partnered with iconic British two-wheeler manufacturer Triumph Motorcycles. Furthermore, the partnership recently unveiled the Triumph Speed 400 and Triumph Scrambler 400 X motorcycles at an event in London.

That being said, here is a quick comparison between the upcoming Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle and the newly launched Harley-Davidson X440 motorcycle. This comparison will be based on 5 parameters.

Design

The upcoming Triumph Speed 400 sports a neo-retro theme with its 'tear-drop' shaped fuel tank and circular design elements such as LED headlamps, LED turn indicators, rear-view mirrors and LED tail lamps. Furthermore, the design theme is further complemented by plenty of iconic Triumph design elements as well.

In comparison, the newly launched Harley-Davidson X440 also follows a similar theme but has taken a different route with its large muscular fuel tank and sleek tail section. Additionally, this motorcycle also features plenty of circular design elements to pull off the neo-retro looks.

Features

The upcoming Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle comes loaded to the brim with features. Some of the noticeable features on this motorcycle include all-LED lighting, ride-by-wire tech, dual-channel ABS, switchable traction control, immobiliser, part-analogue part-digital instrument cluster and many more.

On the other hand, the Harley-Davidson X440 also comes loaded with features such as all-LED lighting, a digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, call answer, and music control. However, the motorcycle seems to lack 'premium' features such as ride-by-wire tech and traction control.

Powertrain

The new Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle is powered by a 398.15cc, liquid-cooled, 4-valve, DOHC engine. This engine is tuned to produce 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Moreover, the motorcycle sports a 6-speed gearbox with a slip & assist clutch.

In comparison, the Harley-Davidson X440 uses a bigger single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine. This engine produces 27bhp at 6,000rpm and 38Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. It is also worth mentioning that the new Harley-Davidson X440 motorcycle comes with a 6-speed gearbox.

Suspension & Brakes

The Triumph Speed 400 comes equipped with 43mm USD forks at the front and a gas-charged monoshock at the rear. In terms of braking, the motorcycle uses a 300mm disc at the front and a 230mm disc at the rear, which are further complimented by a dual-channel ABS system.

The Harley-Davidson X440 also comes equipped with 43mm USD forks at the front but the suspension duty at the rear is handled by a pair of gas-filled shock absorbers. In terms of braking, the disc brake at the front measures 320mm, whereas the company is yet to reveal the specification of the one in the rear. Also, dual-channel ABS is part of the standard fitment.

Price

The Harely-Davidson X440 prices starts from Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes all the way up to Rs 2.69 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, Triumph is yet to reveal the pricing of the Speed 400 motorcycle.

However, we expect the Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle to be significantly pricier than the Harley-Davidson X440 due to its more premium hardware and sophisticated liquid-cooled engine. In fact, we expect the Speed 400 to be priced on par with the KTM 390 Duke (Rs 2.97 lakh, ex-showroom).

Thoughts About Harley-Davidson X440 & Triumph Speed 400

With an aggressive starting price, the new Harley-Davidson X440 motorcycle has clearly gained the attention of its target buyers. However, we do not expect the Bajaj-Triumph partnership to price the upcoming Triumph Speed 400 on par with the HD X440.

In fact, we expect the upcoming Triumph Speed 400 motorcycle to be positioned as a more premium product. Also, given the specifications, the Speed 400 seems to be a more sophisticated product with better hardware.
