Elon Musk while addressing the media for Tesla’s Q2 earnings call has revealed that its much talked about electric pickup truck will now only likely be delivered to customers in mid-2023. He said, “ middle of next year” after he had said “hopefully next year” in the previous earnings call.
The Cybertruck was outlandishly announced in 2019 just before the advent of the pandemic. In August 2021, Tesla announced that the electric pickup truck had been delayed to 2022. While this has happened Rivian, Ford and GM have motored ahead and have launched the R1T, the F-150 Lightning and the Hummer EV.
In 2023, Ford has grand ambitions of making 150,000 F-150 Lightning models whose internal combustion engine avatar is the best-selling vehicle in the US.
The Cybertruck looks outlandish and has a cyberpunk motif borrowed from science fiction movies like Blade Runner and Mad Max. Tesla has been evolving the design of the car to make it meet regulations and make it safe for the roads like its windshield wiper, and the lack of side view mirrors.
Tesla will also deploy new hardware for ADAS in the Cybertruck like new cameras and a new processor for self-driving. As for the new Tesla Roadster which was announced in 2017, it has been pushed back to 2023 as well, but Musk didn’t share any details related to the vehicle in this call.
“Tesla does not have a demand problem, we have a production problem,” Musk said on the earnings call.
