We all know that automotive emission standards are becoming very strict around the globe. However, in a recent turn of events, the Government of India announced a complete ban on diesel-powered cars from 2027 onwards.
With the diesel engine ban, some of the popular diesel cars will no longer be available in India. As such, here is a list of the top 10 diesel car models that will not be available in India after 2027.
Tata Altroz
The Tata Altroz is the only hatchback currently available in India with a diesel powertrain. The Altroz comes with two petrol and one diesel engine option. With the diesel engine ban coming in 2027, Tata Motors will no longer offer the 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel engine in the Altroz hatchback.
Mahindra Bolero
The Mahindra Bolero comes exclusively with a 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel engine. With the diesel ban coming in 2027, the company will either replace this utilitarian diesel engine with a petrol engine or completely discontinue the model.
Mahindra Bolero Neo
Like the Mahindra Bolero, the Bolero Neo also comes exclusively with a 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel engine. However, we expect this model to receive a heavily modified version of the 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine in the Mahindra XUV300.
Tata Nexon
The diesel version of the Tata Nexon is powered by a 1.5-litre, turbocharged powertrain. This powertrain is very frugal and likely to be replaced by Tata Motors' new-gen 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol engine.
Hyundai Venue/Creta/Alcazar
The diesel versions of Hyundai Venue, Creta, and Alcazar SUVs are quite popular among respective segments. Moreover, all of these models use similar 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel powertrains. With the diesel ban, these models will no longer be offered with the diesel powertrain.
Kia Sonet/Seltos/Carens
Both the Kia Sonet, Seltos and Carens come with similar respective diesel engines that power the Hyundai Venue, Creta, and Alcazar SUVs. After the diesel engine ban, these models will come exclusively with petrol powertrain options.
Tata Harrier/Safari
Tata Motors is currently developing a new-gen 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol engine. We expect this new powertrain to replace the current 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel engines in the Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs after the implementation of the diesel engine ban in India.
Mahindra Thar/Scorpio N/XUV700
The Mahindra Thar, Scorpio N, and XUV700 SUVs use a similar 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. With the diesel engine ban, we expect these models to be exclusively offered with Mahindra's 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engines with some sort of hybrid tech to boost fuel efficiency.
Toyota Innova Crysta
The Toyota Innova Crysta comes exclusively mated to a 2.4-litre, turbocharged diesel engine. With the diesel ban in 2027, we expect this model to be completely discontinued from the company's product portfolio.
Toyota Fortuner
The 2.8-litre, turbocharged diesel engine in the Toyota Fortuner is likely to be replaced by a more efficient hybrid powertrain after the implementation of the diesel engine ban. We also expect this new powertrain to be a plug-in hybrid.
Jeep Compass
Given the premium positioning of the Jeep Compass, we expect the 2.0-litre turbocharged powertrain in the Compass SUV to be replaced by a strong hybrid powertrain in the future. This powertrain will be ideal for a majority of Jeep Compass customers.
Thoughts About Diesel Car Ban
The diesel car ban will have an impact on the overall pollution levels. However, to have a bigger impact on the pollution levels, the government should focus on industrial pollution and other pollution sources such as crop burning and waste burning.
