Bharat Benz & Reliance Industries Unveil Hydrogen-Powered Luxury Bus At G20 – Range, Power & More

With the successive introduction of more stringent emission regulations, automobile manufacturers are investing heavily in developing more sustainable modes of transportation. Moreover, the competition in the commercial sector is even more fierce.

That being said, Bharat Benz in collaboration with Reliance Industries seems to have taken a giant leap in the race to build a sustainable commercial transport vehicle with the unveiling of India's first hydrogen-powered intercity luxury bus.

This new hydrogen-powered luxury bus by Bharat Benz & Reliance Industries was unveiled at the 4th Energy Transitions Working Group meeting under India's G20 Presidency at Goa. This high-level meeting was attended by G20 delegates along with Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa.

Speaking about the recently unveiled hydrogen-powered luxury bus, the model is still in its concept stage and it uses an advanced fuel cell system to produce energy. It is also worth mentioning that the fuel cell system was developed by Reliance Industries.

This fuel cell system currently puts out 127kW of power and the new power output is rated at 105kW. While these figures may seem low, this output is almost equivalent to 300hp when aligning it to current diesel buses.

Thanks to fuel cell technology, this newly developed hydrogen-powered bus can travel as far as 400 kilometres on a full tank of hydrogen - This is a major leap in long-distance commercial travel using alternate fuels.

That being said, the newly developed hydrogen-powered intercity buses from Bharat Benz will be undergoing extensive trials for the next 12 months. These tests even include safety testing as well.

These tests will be very crucial as they will determine whether the model will be deployed for commercial use or not. Furthermore, the performance evaluation of the model will also be conducted during the same timeframe.

Also, the unveiling of this hydrogen-powered bus reiterates the progress made by Reliance Industries in the field of sustainable development. Earlier, Reliance Industries unveiled the country's first Hydrogen internal combustion engine - A unique yet feasible solution (powertrain) to power heavy-duty trucks in the country.
